Make sure your resume gets read. Practical formatting and content tips for developer resumes in India.

Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to parse and filter resumes. A resume that cannot be parsed well may never reach a recruiter, no matter how strong your skills are.

  1. Use a simple single-column layout with standard fonts
  2. Use standard headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education
  3. Avoid tables, text boxes, icons and images for important content
  4. Match keywords from the job description — honestly
  5. List technologies explicitly (e.g. “Spring Boot”, “Angular”, “MongoDB”)
  6. Describe projects with what you built, the stack and your contribution
  7. Use action verbs: built, designed, integrated, optimized, debugged
  8. Quantify impact only where you have real numbers
  9. Keep it to one page for freshers, up to two for experienced developers
  10. Save and send as PDF unless a portal asks for another format

A weak vs a strong project line

Weak: “Worked on an e-commerce project.”

Stronger: “Built REST APIs for cart and order management using Spring Boot and MySQL, with input validation and global exception handling.”
